Number - number and place value

When we count in multiples, we keep adding the same amount each time. Looking closely at the pattern helps us predict the next number without starting again from zero.

Multiples of 4

Start at 0 and keep adding 4.

Each number is 4 more than the one before.

Multiples of 50

The tens and hundreds digits change in a regular pattern.

Counting in 50s moves between whole hundreds and numbers ending in 50.

Multiples of 8

Known doubles help with 8s.

8 more each time gives a steady pattern.

Worked example

Continue the sequence 0, 100, 200, 300, ...

  1. Look for the step size in the sequence.
  2. Each jump is 100.
  3. Add 100 to 300.
  4. The next number is 400.
