Number - multiplication and division

Derived facts come from facts we already know. If 4 x 6 = 24, then 4 x 60 = 240. If 8 x 3 = 24, then 24 ÷ 8 = 3. We can use doubling and place value to reason quickly.

Use place value

4 x 6 = 24 helps us see that 4 x 60 = 240.

The basic fact stays the same but one factor is ten times larger.

Use doubling

4 x 7 = 28, so 8 x 7 = 56.

Doubling one factor doubles the product.

Use inverse thinking

If 3 x 8 = 24, then 24 ÷ 3 = 8.

Multiplication facts help division facts.

Worked example

Use 4 x 9 = 36 to work out 8 x 9.

  1. Start with the known fact 4 x 9 = 36.
  2. 8 is double 4.
  3. So the answer must be double 36.
  4. Double 36 is 72, so 8 x 9 = 72.
