Number - fractions

A hundredth is one of 100 equal parts. Hundredths can also be seen when each tenth is divided into 10 smaller equal parts. Counting in hundredths helps link fractions and decimals.

Tenths into hundredths

One tenth can be split into ten hundredths.

Hundredths are smaller equal parts than tenths.

Count up in hundredths

We can count 1100\frac{1}{100}, 2100\frac{2}{100}, 3100\frac{3}{100} and so on.

The denominator stays the same while the numerator changes.

One whole in hundredths

100100\frac{100}{100} is one whole.

One whole can be named in different ways.

Worked example

What comes after 48100\frac{48}{100} when we count in hundredths?

  1. Count in hundredths by increasing the numerator by 1.
  2. 48100\frac{48}{100} is followed by 49100\frac{49}{100}.
  3. The denominator stays as 100 because the whole still has 100 equal parts.
  4. So the next fraction is 49100\frac{49}{100}.
