Number - number and place value

When we count in multiples, we keep adding the same amount each time. Looking for the pattern helps us keep track of larger steps without going back to counting in ones.

Count in 6s

Start at 0 and add 6 each time.

Each jump is 6 more than the one before.

Count in 25s

The numbers move between quarter hundreds and whole hundreds.

Four jumps of 25 make 100.

Count in 1000s

The thousands increase by one thousand each time.

Only the thousands part changes here.

Worked example

Continue the sequence 0, 9, 18, 27, ...

  1. Look at the step between each pair of numbers.
  2. Each jump adds 9.
  3. Add 9 to 27.
  4. The next number is 36.
