Number - multiplication and division

Knowing a multiplication fact helps with related division facts. If 7 x 8 = 56, then 56 ÷ 7 = 8 and 56 ÷ 8 = 7. Quick recall makes larger calculations and problem solving easier.

A fact family

7 x 8 = 56 belongs with 56 ÷ 7 = 8 and 56 ÷ 8 = 7.

The same three numbers make linked facts.

Use known patterns

12 x 4 = 48 follows the same equal-groups pattern as smaller tables facts.

The table pattern stays regular.

Division links back

If 9 x 6 = 54, then 54 ÷ 9 = 6.

Division undoes multiplication.

Worked example

Use 11 x 3 = 33 to write two division facts.

Multiplication11 x 3 = 33
Division33 ÷ 11 = 3
Division33 ÷ 3 = 11
  1. Start with the multiplication fact.
  2. Use the total 33 for the division facts.
  3. 33 divided by 11 gives 3.
  4. 33 divided by 3 gives 11.
