When we add or subtract powers of 10, only some places change. Adding 10 changes the tens and ones pattern. Adding 100 changes the hundreds pattern. Adding 1,000 changes the thousands pattern.
Count back in hundreds
208,500, 208,400, 208,300 subtracts one hundred each step.
The hundred changes while the thousands stay the same.
Count on in thousands
599,000, 600,000, 601,000 crosses into the next hundred thousand.
Sometimes a place changes because the smaller place reaches ten of that place.

- Compare the first two numbers.
- Each step adds 1,000.
- Add 1,000 to 247,600.
- The next number is 248,600.
