Measurement

Volume is how much space a solid takes up. Capacity is how much a container can hold. In practical problems, we often estimate first and then calculate using the operation that matches the context.

Estimate capacity

A mug might hold about 300 ml, while a bucket holds much more.

Think about the size of the container.

Use multiplication in a measure problem

Four bottles of 750 ml hold 3000 ml altogether.

Equal groups often mean multiplication.

Use division to share a measure

2 litres shared into 4 equal cups gives 500 ml each.

Use one unit before dividing.

Worked example

A tank holds 8 litres. How many millilitres is that?

  1. One litre is 1000 millilitres.
  2. Multiply 8 by 1000.
  3. 8 x 1000 = 8000.
  4. So the tank holds 8000 ml.
