Measurement

Area measures the space inside a shape. Perimeter measures the distance around it. Two shapes can cover the same area but have different perimeters, and two shapes can share a perimeter but have different areas.

Same area, different perimeter

A 1 by 12 rectangle and a 3 by 4 rectangle both have area 12 square units.

Different rectangles can share a perimeter of 20 units but cover different areas.

Worked example

Which has the greater perimeter: a 1 by 12 rectangle or a 3 by 4 rectangle?

  1. Work out the perimeter of 1 by 12: 2 x (1 + 12) = 26.
  2. Work out the perimeter of 3 by 4: 2 x (3 + 4) = 14.
  3. Compare the two perimeters.
  4. The 1 by 12 rectangle has the greater perimeter.

Common mistakes

Watch for these when working through the lesson.

  • Mixing up the formulas for area and perimeter.
  • Assuming the shape with the bigger area must have the bigger perimeter.
  • Only comparing one measurement instead of both.
