Statistics and data - stem-and-leaf diagrams

A stem-and-leaf diagram sorts data while keeping every original value visible. Each number is split into a 'stem' (all digits except the last) and a 'leaf' (the last digit). Leaves are always written in order along each stem row, and a key such as '2 | 3 means 23' shows how to read the diagram.

Split each value into a stem and a leaf

The value 23 has stem 2 and leaf 3. The value 31 has stem 3 and leaf 1.

The stem holds every digit except the last one, which becomes the leaf.

Build the diagram from raw data

12 pupils recorded these ages in months over their target: 19, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, 28, 31, 31, 33, 34, 40.

From the diagram above, the smallest value is 19 and the largest is 40.

Worked example

Find the median, mode and range of these 10 test scores: 12, 15, 18, 21, 23, 23, 27, 29, 32, 35.

Key: 1 | 2 means 12 marks

  1. Split every score into a stem (tens) and a leaf (units), and order the leaves along each row.
  2. There are 10 scores, so the median is the average of the 5th and 6th values once ordered: 23 and 23.
  3. The mode is 23, since it is the only value that appears twice.
  4. The range is the largest value minus the smallest: 35 - 12 = 23.

Common mistakes

Watch for these when working through the lesson.

  • Writing the leaves in the order they were collected instead of sorting them along each row.
  • Forgetting to check the key, which shows how a stem and a leaf combine back into a value.
