Lesson overview

Number - fractions

One half means 1 of 2 equal parts. The parts must be equal. If two parts are not the same size, they are not halves. We can find one half of a shape, an object or a small quantity by splitting it fairly into 2 equal parts.

This rectangle is split into 2 equal parts.

One of the 2 equal parts is one half.

1 half of the rectangle

6 strawberries are shared into 2 equal groups.

Half of 6 is 3 because 6 split equally into 2 groups gives 3 in each group.

1 half of 6 is 3

This apple is cut into 2 equal pieces.

One equal piece is one half of the apple.

1 half of the apple

  2. Split the counters into 2 equal groups.
  3. Check both groups have the same number.
  4. There are 4 counters in one group, so one half of 8 is 4.
