Number - fractions

One quarter means 1 of 4 equal parts. The 4 parts must be equal. If the parts are not the same size, they are not quarters. We can find one quarter of a shape, an object or a small quantity by splitting it fairly into 4 equal parts.

  1. Start with 12 counters.
  2. Split the counters into 4 equal groups.
  3. Check all 4 groups have the same number.
  4. There are 3 counters in one group, so one quarter of 12 is 3.
