Number - multiplication and division

A multiplication or division statement is a number sentence. It shows the numbers, the operation sign and the answer. We can use the 2, 5 and 10 times tables to complete missing answers and to write matching division facts. The equals sign means both sides have the same value.

Worked example

Complete the statement 5 x 4 = __ and write the matching division fact.

  1. Use the 5 times table.
  2. Count in 5s four times: 5, 10, 15, 20.
  3. So 5 x 4 = 20.
  4. Now use the same total to write the division fact.
  5. 20 ÷ 5 = 4.

Common mistakes

Watch for these when writing multiplication and division statements.

  • Putting the answer in the middle instead of after the equals sign.
  • Using the right numbers but the wrong operation sign.
  • Forgetting that a matching division fact uses the same total.
  • Treating the equals sign as the place to start rather than as a sign meaning both sides are the same.
