Number - multiplication and division
A multiplication or division statement is a number sentence. It shows the numbers, the operation sign and the answer. We can use the 2, 5 and 10 times tables to complete missing answers and to write matching division facts. The equals sign means both sides have the same value.

Complete the statement 5 x 4 = __ and write the matching division fact.
- Use the 5 times table.
- Count in 5s four times: 5, 10, 15, 20.
- So 5 x 4 = 20.
- Now use the same total to write the division fact.
- 20 ÷ 5 = 4.

Common mistakes
Watch for these when writing multiplication and division statements.
- Putting the answer in the middle instead of after the equals sign.
- Using the right numbers but the wrong operation sign.
- Forgetting that a matching division fact uses the same total.
- Treating the equals sign as the place to start rather than as a sign meaning both sides are the same.
