Number - fractions

Equivalent fractions name the same amount. Two quarters and one half cover the same part of a whole when the parts are equal. We can also write simple fraction statements such as 12\frac{1}{2} of 6 = 3 by finding half of a quantity.

24\frac{2}{4} and 12\frac{1}{2} can cover the same amount.

A fraction sentence

We can write a fraction fact as a number sentence.

Write the fraction, the whole amount, and the part you found.

Worked example

Show that 24\frac{2}{4} is the same as 12\frac{1}{2}, then find 12\frac{1}{2} of 8.

  1. Look at the whole split into 4 equal parts.
  2. Two of the four parts make half of the whole.
  3. So 24\frac{2}{4} is equivalent to 12\frac{1}{2}.
  4. Now share 8 into 2 equal groups.
  5. Each half is 4, so 12\frac{1}{2} of 8 = 4.
