Round to the nearest 100
5,163 rounds to 5,200 because 63 is more than halfway from 5,100 to 5,200.
The tens digit helps decide when rounding to 100.
Round to the nearest 1000
7,480 rounds to 7,000 because it is less than 7,500.
Halfway is 7,500.
Worked example
Round 4,372 to the nearest 100.
- Find the nearest hundreds around the number: 4,300 and 4,400.
- Look at the tens digit or think about the halfway point.
- 4,372 is closer to 4,400 than 4,300.
- So 4,372 rounds to 4,400.
