0.3 is the same as 0.30 because 3 tenths equals 30 hundredths.
A zero can hold a decimal place without changing the value.

Tenths, hundredths and thousandths are linked by place value. One tenth is ten hundredths and one hundred hundredths is one whole. Decimal equivalents help us move between fractions and decimals.
Use thousandths
0.007 means 7 thousandths.
Each move right makes the part ten times smaller.
Fraction to decimal
= 0.5 and = 0.25.
Some common fractions have familiar decimal forms.
Worked example
What is 4 tenths and 8 thousandths as a decimal?
- Start with 4 tenths, which is 0.4.
- Add 8 thousandths, which is 0.008.
- Keep the decimal places lined up.
- The decimal is 0.408.
