Number - decimals and percentages

Rounding decimals follows the same idea as rounding whole numbers. First decide the place you are rounding to, then look one place to the right to decide whether the number rounds down or up.

Round to the nearest whole number

3.67 rounds to 4 because the tenths digit is 6.

The tenths decide when rounding to a whole number.

Round to one decimal place

5.24 rounds to 5.2 because the hundredths digit is 4.

The hundredths decide when rounding to one decimal place.

Use the halfway point

6.85 rounds to 6.9 because the hundredths digit is 5.

Five in the deciding place rounds up.

Worked example

Round 4.36 to one decimal place.

  1. The target place is tenths.
  2. Look at the hundredths digit, which is 6.
  3. Because 6 is 5 or more, the tenths round up.
  4. So 4.36 rounds to 4.4.
