Number - fractions

Equivalent fractions show the same amount even though they use different numbers. We can find them by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number.

Same amount, different names

12\frac{1}{2}, 24\frac{2}{4} and 510\frac{5}{10} are all equivalent.

The amount stays the same when the parts are split evenly.

Use multiplication

35\frac{3}{5} becomes 610\frac{6}{10} when both parts are doubled.

Multiply top and bottom by the same number.

Link to hundredths

710\frac{7}{10} is the same as 70100\frac{70}{100}.

Tenths can be renamed as hundredths.

Worked example

Write two equivalent fractions for 45\frac{4}{5}.

  1. Multiply numerator and denominator by 2.
  2. That gives 810\frac{8}{10}.
  3. Multiply numerator and denominator by 4.
  4. That gives 1620\frac{16}{20}.

  • Changing only the numerator or only the denominator.
  • Using a different multiplier on the top and bottom.
  • Thinking fractions with different numbers cannot be equal.
