Number - fractions, decimals and percentages

Digits to the right of the decimal point are tenths, hundredths and thousandths. Multiplying by 10, 100 or 1000 makes the number larger, while dividing by these powers of 10 makes it smaller.

Decimal places

In 3.482, the 4 is tenths, the 8 is hundredths and the 2 is thousandths.

4.26 x 10 = 42.6.

The digits keep their place-value pattern.

Worked example

Work out 3.482 x 100.

  1. Multiplying by 100 makes the number one hundred times larger.
  2. The digits shift two places left in value.
  3. 3.482 becomes 348.2.
  4. So 3.482 x 100 = 348.2.
