Number - number and place value

Negative numbers are useful for temperatures, heights below sea level, money owed and floors below ground. When we calculate an interval across zero, we count the distance from the negative value up to zero and then on to the positive value.

Temperatures below and above zero

A temperature can rise from a negative number to a positive number.

Moving to the right means the temperature is increasing.

Calculate an interval across zero

The interval from -3 to 4 is 7 because it is 3 to reach zero and 4 more to reach 4.

Use a context

A lift can move from floor -2 up to floor 5.

Worked example

A diver moves from -6 metres to 2 metres. What is the interval?

  1. Start at -6 metres.
  2. Count from -6 up to 0. That interval is 6.
  3. Then count from 0 up to 2. That interval is 2.
  4. Add 6 and 2, so the total interval is 8 metres.

Common mistakes
