Number - number and place value

A number can be shown in different ways, such as digits, words, partitioned values and a position on a number line. Estimating means making a sensible guess by looking at where the number fits.

Worked example

Estimate the number marked halfway between 600 and 700.

  1. Look at the two end points on the number line.
  2. Halfway between 600 and 700 is 50 more than 600.
  3. 600 + 50 = 650.
  4. So the estimate is 650.
